Taliban talks underway in Norway

What the Taliban want to achieve

Three days of talks between Taliban representatives, the Norwegian Government and allied countries began in Oslo, Norway over the weekend. The first since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan in August last year, the talks are aimed at addressing the worsening humanitarian situation in Afghanistan.

NCHS Director and Afghanistan researcher, Antonio De Lauri has given his comments on what the Taliban may hope to achieve through the talks in a recent interview with Norwegian news outlet, VG.

De Lauri, a Research Professor at the Chr. Michelsen Institute, believes the Taliban have clear goals they want to achieve, including releasing international humanitarian funding. Implicitly, the Taliban is seeking recognition at the international level, says De Lauri.
