Worsening Crisis in the Sahel

Food Security, donor priorities and geopolitical shifts

The invasion of Ukraine has impacted the price of staple items and competition over fertile land in a region already characterised by violence by extremist groups, transnational crime, inter-ethnic violence, and social unrest, highlights Marie Sandnes, Doctoral Researcher at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO).

While the donor community has turned its attention to Ukraine, this policy brief warns against increasing visibility of the Russian security apparatus as part of a global competition for influence. Findings in the policy brief point out how Russian propaganda and disinformation campaigns can threaten regional stability in the form of installments of pro-Russian authoritarian regime.

This policy brief forms part of the ‘Consequences of the Invasion of Ukraine for the Global South’ project led by Nicholas Marsh at PRIO.
