Film screening of ‘Mama’ – Afghan Refugees in Norway

The documentary ‘Mama’ portrays the stories of Afghan asylum seekers across Europe and their families in Afghanistan through the eyes of a Norwegian retired teacher, who has taken in 60 such boys, becoming their “mama.”

The Culture House (Kulturhuset) in Oslo is hosting a special screening of ‘Mama’ on Monday 29 November 2021 from 6:30PM to 8:30PM at Boksen, Kulturhuset in Oslo.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion between the film-maker, Preethi Nallu, and experts on Afghanistan. The panel will include NCHS Director and Research Professor at the Chr. Michelsen Institute, Antonio De Lauri.

Other panelists include Liv Kjølseth the Secretary General of the Norwegian Afghanistan Committee. The panel will discuss the need for more quotas for asylum seekers and support for new arrivals to Norway. Gro Dregelid, the narrator of the film and retired teacher who has supported many Afghan refugees, will provide her views on community level integration. The discussion will be moderated by Ståle Wig, a Postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Social Anthropology, University of Oslo.
