Webinar

Digital innovation and the future of humanitarian action

This NCHS webinar looks into scenario methods in the context of digital technology and innovation in humanitarian action. The topic is introduced by Brita Fladvad Nielsen, Associate Professor at Department of Design at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

This webinar presents the basics of what scenario building is and how it can be used. In her presentation, Nielsen explains the principles of Forecasting, Backcasting, Worst case scenario approach, Planning games and Storytelling, using concrete examples.

A special focus is placed on complex and unpredictable futures with many variables and multiple stakeholder interests. Finally, the role of new technologies is discussed.

This is followed by an open roundtable discussion on how these methods can be applied to debates on the ethics of digital innovation in humanitarian action.

The meeting is chaired by Kristoffer Lidén, Senior Researcher at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO).

The webinar is organised in collaboration with the PRIO project Do No Harm: Ethical Humanitarian Innovation and Digital Bodies, the NCHS and the Norwegian Red Cross.
