On 1 June, the European Migration Network (EMN), Norway’s annual conference, with the theme of The Use of Technology in Identity Verification was held, co-hosted by EMN Norway, the Norwegian Ministry of Justice and Public Security, and the Norwegian Immigration Directorate (UDI).
Establishing and verifying a person’s identity are core issues when reviewing and processing applications for immigration, asylum and residence. As a result, authorities constantly focus efforts on developing robust, effective methods and systems designed to establish and verify identity. The conference had the objective of discussing the possibilities and challenges faced by immigration authorities when verifying the identity of asylum seekers and other immigrants, focusing especially on the role technology can play in identity verification.
Maria Gabrielsen Jumbert (PRIO) presented a lecture, ‘The digital migrant – ethical, legal and humanitarian perspectives’. To read further about this topic, please see the blog post, ‘Give Us Your Phone and We May Grant You Asylum‘.
